Every year, millions of patients visit the dermatologist office complaining of skin problems including fine lines and wrinkles, persistent red complexion, sun spots, acne scars, large pores and other blemishes. Various treatments, including micro-dermabrasion, chemical peels and laser resurfacing have been used to improve these conditions. Intense pulsed light is a new, non-ablative technique to treat the above described conditions and is also called photo-rejuvenation.

How does V - IPL (Photo Facials) work?

The V - IPL hand piece delivers high intensity pulses of broadband light that is different from the narrow band light of lasers. V - IPL, which stands for Variant Intensed Pulsed Light, is non-ablative meaning that is does not damage the surface of the skin. The intense light is delivered to the deeper parts of the skin (dermis) and leaves the superficial aspect of the skin (epidermis) untouched. There are different versions of IPL available on the market that target different structures in the skin. The PhotoDerm V-IPL-SC targets vascular lesions such as spider veins and vascular birthmarks. Also targets pigmented lesions such as melasma and age spots. The PhotoDerm V-IPL-HR target hair. The thermal effect of IPL also causes production new collagen, leading to improvement in wrinkles.

What are V - IPL’s advantages?

The V-IPL technology penetrates into the deepest skin layers, and has proven effective against acne, wrinkles, rosacea, large pores, sun damage and age spots. V-IPL Photofacials stimulate new collagen growth and jumpstart the skin's ability to eliminate the top layers of damaged, exposed skin.

As discussed above, V-IPL does not damage the skin surface, unlike dermabrasion and laser resurfacing. Therefore, there is virtually no recovery time.” Treatments take approximately 30-45 minutes. Patients can apply makeup before leaving the office and return to work the same day. There is also minimal pain with V-IPL, unlike laser or radiofrequency resurfacing which both require topical anesthetic. Also, with V-IPL, a larger area can be treated at one time than with laser treatment.

What are V - IPL’s disadvantages?
Given that there is little damage to the skin surface, several treatments may be required to see the desired effect. For best results, approximately 4-6 treatments, spaced 3 weeks apart, are needed. Side effects can include transient redness and increased or decreased pigment in the treated area. Minimizing sun exposure can reduce these side effects.
How much does V - IPL cost?
Prices usually vary according to the ipl treatment size. The average cost for a PhotoFacial V-IPL is from RM 72 – RM 1,000 each treatment, depending on the body part.
A consultation with a PhotoFacial specialist and the number of treatments needed will determine your V-IPL treatment cost.

1. What is V - IPL treatment?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments are a non-invasive medical technology which uses light therapy in the treatment of the following:-
• Permanent hair reduction
• Rejuvenation (facial)
• Pigmentation reduction
• Reduction of sun spots
• Capillary vascular reduction
• Acne treatments

2. Initial V - IPL consultations are FREE
This includes establishing client suitability, the client being comfortable with the process, understanding the advantages and disadvantages, precautions to take, and test patching. Test patching enables you to experience our V - IPL without a full treatment. As you would expect there is absolutely no obligation after the consultation process.

3. Does it hurt?
With our modern state of the art machine there is minimal discomfort. Other treatments such as waxing are 3 to 4 times as painful. With V - IPL all you may feel is a slight pinch or heating sensation.

4. After your treatment
You may experience some short-term effects of your V-IPL treatment. This may include slight reddening of the skin or localised swelling which will go within a few hours. You will be given post-treatment care instructions.

5. Any restrictions or down-time after an V-IPL treatment?
You can return to work after your V-IPL treatment and resume regular activities. Treated areas must be kept protected from the sun for six weeks after treatment.

6. How many V-IPL treatments are required?
For treatments targeting permanent hair reduction an average of 6 to 8 treatments are usually required - however some people may need more, whilst others may need less. This also applies to other treatments as well. Rejuvenation on average requires 3 to 5 sessions. Pigmentation and sun spot reduction average 4 to 6 visits. Capillary and vein reduction require up to 5 treatments.

7. V -IPL frequently asked questions FAQ

Q. - 1. What is the difference between Intense Pulsed Light and Laser treatments?
Ans. - Laser is a coherent single beam of light, whereas IPL is incoherent and delivers a wider spectrum of wavelengths. Larger areas of the skin can also normally be targeted with IPL than with laser

Q. - 2. Why choose V-IPL and not other hair reduction methods?
Ans. – V-IPL treatments are non-invasive and gentler on the skin.
• Treatment areas are larger, therefore treatment time is shorter.
• Ingrown hairs will not form, in fact, V-IPL treatments prevent their formation.
• Shaving is only a short-term fix.
• Waxing can be very painful, and can cause inflammation and ingrown hairs
• Electrolysis is very painful, with treatments restricted to single hair follicles.
• Chemical depilation is slow and messy.
• Lasers are more painful, have the potential to cause more damage to the skin and significant down time.

Q. - 3. Can red and blonde hair be treated successfully?
Ans. - These hair types are generally not recommended for V-IPL treatments as there is generally not enough pigment in the hair to treat the follicles. The results cannot be guaranteed.

Q. - 4. Are there certain areas which can not be treated?
Ans. -Yes - the following are a list of areas or conditions where V-IPL is not suitable.
• Areas identified by your skin specialist.
• Moles.
• Over tattoos or semi-permanent makeup.
• White hairs.
• Recent microdermabrasion, deep peels or laser resurfaces areas.
• Photosensitivity due to some medications, i.e., antidepressants, antihistamines, antimicrobial, antipsychotic drugs, diuretics.
• Where a client may have epilepsy, porphyria, diabetes, psoriasis, hypo or hyper pigmentation, eczema or dermatitis.

V - IPL Treatment for Acne

Acne begins with excess oil production by overactive sebaceous glands, which prevents dead skin cells from being shed. These cells then clog pores, creating a favorable environment for acne-causing anaerobic bacteria. Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy is a type of laser acne treatment provided by dermatologists and other doctors, and estheticians.

Identification
1. V-IPL treatment for acne uses light in specific wavelengths of yellow, green and red, emitted in short pulses that penetrate the skin. V-IPL produces oxygen below the surface, destroying the anaerobic acne bacteria, as well as shrinking the overactive sebaceous glands and reducing inflammation. It is effective at treating mild to moderate acne.

Process
2. People receiving V-IPL treatment wear eye goggles for protection, and the skin care, professional applies a layer of chilled gel to the skin. Then the V-IPL applicator is placed on the skin, releasing a light pulse. This process is repeated until the entire area has been treated, which usually takes about a half hour. The laser therapist wipes away the gel and applies a moisturizer.

Side Effects
3. V-IPL treatment can cause some slight brief pain sensations like pinpricks. Afterward, redness and warmth can be expected, and the treatment provider applies a cooling pack to relieve these side effects. Some people experience obvious redness, which may last a few hours. Because there also may be side effects of dark spots, light spots and blistering, a patch test is recommended before the full treatment.

A significant side effect is patchy hair loss, which may be permanent. This is a consideration for men who like to have a beard or mustache. Side effects are more common when treating body acne than facial acne.

Time Frame
4. Some laser treatment centers recommend two V-IPL treatments per week, and some every other week. Clients usually see significant improvement after four to six treatments. Skin should continue to improve after the course of treatment is finished. Results vary depending on the individual and the severity of the condition.

Considerations
5. Pregnant women should talk with their doctor before having V-IPL treatment, since there is no information available on whether laser skin treatment affects unborn babies. People taking other types of acne medication should not have V-IPL treatment. People with very dark skin or tans also cannot have V-IPL therapy.
